IPL’s Business Value Surges to $20.6 Billion Amid Record Franchise Sales

The Indian Premier League's business value has soared to $20.6 billion, driven by record franchise purchases and robust commercial growth.

IPL's Remarkable Growth

The Indian Premier League (IPL), renowned as the world's richest Twenty20 cricket league, has witnessed an impressive surge in its business value, now soaring to an estimated $20.6 billion. According to the latest report by the United States-based investment bank Houlihan Lokey, this marks a growth rate exceeding 11% for the second consecutive year, solidifying IPL's status as a dominant force in global sports.

Franchise Transactions Boost Value

The 2026 IPL Brand Valuation Study released by Houlihan Lokey underscores significant transactions that have contributed to this extraordinary value increase. Earlier this year, landmark purchases included the Royal Challengers Bengaluru franchise at a record-high price of $1.78 billion and the Rajasthan Royals franchise, sold for $1.65 billion. This wave of investor interest emphasizes the desirability and profitability of IPL franchises.

Insights from Experts

According to Harsh Talikoti, a director at Houlihan Lokey’s financial and valuation advisory team, the recent franchise transactions highlight the escalating valuations and investor confidence in the IPL. Talikoti remarked, "Franchise valuations have reached new highs, private capital participation has accelerated, and the league’s commercial ecosystem continues to diversify."

He further stated that the IPL represents a unique convergence of sport, media, and consumer opportunities, showcasing strong revenue visibility and a growing global audience. The report illustrates heightened confidence from investors regarding long-term value creation within the league.

Brand Value and Market Position

In addition to its overall business value, the IPL's brand itself has increased by 10.3%, now valued at $4.3 billion. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru continues to hold the title of the most valuable franchise within the league, boasting a brand value of $312 million. This growth affirms the IPL’s market strength and wide-reaching appeal among fans and investors alike.

The league's efficient blend of broadcast revenues, sponsorships, merchandising, and franchise investment has enabled it to attract top-tier global cricket talent, resulting in a rich competitive environment that continues to captivate audiences.

As the season progresses and the league expands, these metrics are expected to evolve, reflecting the IPL’s vibrant economic landscape and solidifying its position as a premier cricketing institution globally.
