Veteran Actor James Handy Passes Away

James Handy, a veteran actor celebrated for his roles in major films including Top Gun: Maverick and Logan, has died at the age of 81. His lifeless body was discovered outside his home in Tarzana, California, with a stab wound to his chest. Authorities have arrested Michael Gledhill, 44, in connection with Handy's murder, holding him with a bail set at $2 million.

Circumstances Surrounding His Death

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that they received a radio call around 9:30 a.m. on June 3, 2026, regarding a situation of unknown trouble in the 19200 block of Erwin Street. Upon arrival, officers found Handy unconscious; he was quickly transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In their statement, the LAPD noted, "The 911 caller stated, ‘I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.’" Gledhill, the suspected assailant, reportedly resided at the same address with his mother, who was in a relationship with Handy. Detectives believe the incident was isolated and have assured the public that there is currently no ongoing threat.

A Prolific Career

Born James Michael Handy in New York City, Handy accumulated over 140 screen credits throughout his impressive career. He began his journey in acting with a guest appearance on the soap opera Ryan’s Hope in 1977, and his first film role came in the 1981 military drama Taps, which starred future superstars including Tom Cruise and Sean Penn.

Handy gained further acclaim with a supporting role in the 1982 film The Verdict, a courtroom drama that received five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. His last credited role was in the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick (2022), where he portrayed Jimmy the bartender.

Among his many notable performances, Handy also featured in the horror-comedy Arachnophobia (1991), played Wilton Briggs in The Rocketeer (1992), and appeared in the beloved family movie Jumanji (1995). His role as the physician who attended to Hugh Jackman's character in Logan (2017) is remembered as a significant contribution to his extensive filmography.

Television Contributions

In addition to his successful film career, Handy starred in several prominent television series. He played key roles such as Matt Fielding Sr. on Melrose Place (1992-1995) and Borough Commander Haverill on NYPD Blue (1993-1995). His talent led to recurring appearances on shows like Profiler, Alias, and numerous guest spots on popular series including The X-Files, ER, and CSI: NY.
