Japan Issues Tsunami Alert Following 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck off the northern coast of Iwate prefecture in Japan, instigating an immediate tsunami alert and evacuation order for residents in the coastal areas. This seismic activity was felt widely, reaching as far south as Tokyo, prompting safety precautions and emergency measures across the region.

Earthquake Details and Tsunami Warnings

The quake occurred early on Monday and was recorded at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned of potential tidal waves reaching heights of up to three meters (10 feet) along the northern coast. Following the earthquake, an 80-centimeter (32-inch) tsunami was reported near Kuji port, marking a concerning development in the already tense situation.

Officials emphasized the urgency of the situation. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged citizens in affected areas to seek immediate refuge in higher ground or designated evacuation centers. He stated, "For those of you who live in areas for which the warnings have been issued, please evacuate to higher, safer places."

Evacuations and Transport Disruptions

The tsunami warnings necessitated the evacuation of several areas along the northern coastline, extending the alert northward to Hokkaido. Local authorities have advised residents to stay clear of coastal and riverside locations until the alarm is lifted.

Moreover, the railway disruptions have begun, with the Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Aomori suspended as a precautionary measure. These disruptions underline the significant impact of the earthquake on transportation networks critical for the affected regions.
