Previously, Griffin's largest donation was $300 million to his alma mater, Harvard University, in 2023. He also contributed $125 million to the University of Chicago in 2017. Since relocating Citadel's headquarters to Miami in 2022, Griffin has emerged as a prominent benefactor in South Florida, donating $50 million each to various institutions such as the University of Miami's cancer center and the Baptist Health Foundation.

While Griffin's generosity is widely acknowledged, he has also been vocal about higher education leaders and the direction of elite universities. In a 2024 interview, he paused donations to Harvard, criticizing its response to campus antisemitism.
