After Washington State's 34-24 defeat against Arizona at Gesa Field, head coach Kirby Moore conveyed a mix of disappointment and pride during his post-game press conference.

Moore left no room for doubt about the impact of the loss, stating plainly, "This should hurt." He acknowledged his team's fight and effort but highlighted several key shortcomings that contributed to the outcome, particularly in the second half.

A Promising Start Undermined by Missed Opportunities

The Cougars commenced the game strong, scoring a touchdown early but quickly found themselves stymied by mistakes. Moore reflected on the first half, saying, "We started fast with a TD and the interception. We had other opportunities there within the first half." The momentum turned as Arizona executed effectively, leading to a series of inefficient drives from Washington State in the third quarter, characterized by three punts and a turnover.

Critical Adjustments Needed

Moving into the latter half of the match, Moore noted that Arizona's defense ramped up its performance, leading to difficulties for Washington State's offense. He remarked, "In the second half, we didn’t do a good job of that, or didn’t protect the quarterback. Obviously, they did a better job of executing than we did."

Despite some dialogue among players about adjustments, Moore admitted the results did not reflect that communication on the field. "At the end of the day, we’ve got to have production on the field in the second half of a tight game. Our defense battled their defense off. So, that can’t happen again."

Managing Players and Fostering Growth

Part of the team’s struggle was attributed to mental mistakes, particularly with quarterback Caden Pinnick. Moore noted the need for education on taking care of the football, stating, "We’ve got to learn from that. We can’t make a bad play worse."

He emphasized collective responsibility, saying, "It starts with me. Obviously with the offensive staff, it’s just having that dialogue with him ... There on the third down, we ran the quarterback. He slides. That is an unfortunate one, right?"

Looking Ahead

Facing a series of upcoming conference games, Moore urged his players to maintain a positive mental outlook. He affirmed, "They should walk out of here with their head up - and we have a whole lot of conference play in front of them. We have to come to the building tomorrow with the right mindset."

Washington State must now regroup as they prepare for the challenges ahead in their season, hopeful for improvement and resilience after a tough loss to Arizona.
