Lucy Liu Reflects on Misdiagnosis and the Importance of Health Advocacy

Lucy Liu shares her misdiagnosis with breast cancer and urges the importance of health advocacy and routine screenings for women.

Lucy Liu’s Journey Through Misdiagnosis

In the early 1990s, actress Lucy Liu faced a daunting health scare after discovering a lump in her breast. After a quick examination, she received an alarming diagnosis: breast cancer.

"Of course, I was like, ‘Let's schedule the surgery right away,’" Lucy recalls. However, the surgery revealed that her lump was benign. In light of this experience, Lucy has become a vocal advocate for health awareness and proactive medical screenings.

Lessons Learned on Health Advocacy

Reflecting on her journey, Lucy acknowledges a fundamental gap in her understanding of how to advocate for herself during the diagnosis process. "I really did not know how to advocate for myself," she states. Now, at 57, she emphasizes the significance of early screenings, sharing her story through a partnership with PfizerForAll.

The Importance of Routine Screenings

Since her misdiagnosis, Lucy has made routine screenings a priority in her healthcare regimen.

"After that, I would go in annually and get a mammogram—they specifically specialized in breasts and cancer and mammography," she shares. As a mother balancing numerous responsibilities, she urges other women to prioritize their health. "We are so busy as women, as parents, as daughters… I think if you do for yourself and you give back to yourself, it can be life-saving."

Advocating in the Doctor’s Office

Lucy also highlights the importance of bringing a companion to medical appointments to help absorb information. "If you hear something, your brain sort of shuts down… you might miss something," she explains. She encourages patients to ask questions without fear, asserting, "Don't preface it by saying, ‘This is a stupid question.’ It's a question. If somebody's making you feel stupid, that's their problem."

Moreover, she advocates for connecting with support groups to share resources and experiences.

Navigating Health Information in the Digital Age

Lucy emphasizes that while online resources can be beneficial, diagnosing oneself without professional guidance can be detrimental. "There's a danger in there," she cautions, underscoring the importance of balancing personal research with professional advice. She encourages individuals to engage with healthcare providers to obtain accurate information.

Finding Inner Strength

Throughout her life, Lucy has relied on her inner strength to overcome various challenges. She views strength as a muscle that must be continuously developed. "Strength is very closely connected to willpower. It's an energy, it's a vibration… an infinite journey towards all the possibilities that it can bring you," she reflects.

Lucy Liu’s journey from misdiagnosis to becoming a health advocate serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing one’s health and advocating for oneself in medical settings.

With the right balance of thorough personal advocacy and professional support, women can empower themselves to take control of their health journeys, ensuring that their voices are not only heard but also respected in vital healthcare discussions.
