Max Whitlock Reveals Retirement U-Turn as He Eyes LA 2028 Olympics
Max Whitlock is determined to prove himself, reversing his retirement plans as he targets a spot in the LA 2028 Olympics.
Max Whitlock's Comeback Journey
Max Whitlock, the distinguished three-time Olympic gymnastics champion, has announced a surprising U-turn in his retirement plans, aiming to compete in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Initially slated to hang up his leotard after the Paris 2024 Games, Whitlock is now eager to make the most of his remaining years in competition.
A Resilient Spirit
After experiencing a disappointing finish at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he just missed the medals in the pommel horse event, Whitlock felt an undeniable urge to return to the sport. "It's incredible to be back. It feels amazing to be able to say that I'm a gymnast again, I'm an athlete," he shared with Sky Sports News. This renewed passion comes after competing in his first international event since his decision to return, where he recognized both the challenges and triumphs that lay ahead.
Goals and Motivations
As he prepares for upcoming competitions, including the Commonwealth Games and World Championships, Whitlock has set his sights firmly on the LA Olympics in two years. "I want to take my main discipline, the pommel horse, further than I've ever pushed it," he stated. Despite being 35 years old at the time of the Olympics, he remains undeterred, affirming, "I will be done after LA, I will be finished!"
Whitlock reflects on his career, acknowledging that his last Olympic experience was not the conclusion he envisioned. "Missing out on a medal was a lot tougher than I expected, and my career didn’t finish in the right way. I couldn't fight the feeling that something was just constantly itching out of me," he expressed.
Support from Family
The unexpected comeback has received full support from his family. "There was zero persuasion, and I think a lot of people close to me saw that something was missing," Whitlock added. His wife and daughter are particularly excited about his return, showing their enthusiasm to support him as he competes again.
Whitlock’s journey emphasizes resilience and passion as he embarks on this new chapter, aiming to leave the sport on a high note and fulfill his ambitions before calling it quits indefinitely.
