Michael Kim Makes History with 59 at the 2026 3M Open

Michael Kim shot a stunning 12-under 59 at the 2026 3M Open, making him the 16th player in PGA Tour history to achieve a sub-60 round.

Historic Achievement at the 3M Open

In an astonishing display of skill, Michael Kim made history at the 2026 3M Open by shooting a blistering 12-under 59 at TPC Twin Cities. This remarkable feat makes Kim the 16th player in the illustrious history of the PGA Tour to record a sub-60 round, joining an elite group of golfers.

Strong Start and Impressive Back Nine

Kim's journey to 59 began with a couple of pars but quickly transformed as he surged forward with five consecutive birdies from the third to the seventh holes. Blasting through the front nine, he turned at 29, carrying tremendous momentum into the back nine.

After an almost quiet start on the back side with just two birdies over the first five holes, it seemed as if Kim might miss the historic total. However, he regained his scoring form, finishing strong with four consecutive birdies from holes 15 to 18, culminating in a dramatic 24-foot putt for his closing birdie at the last hole. His triumphant fist pump signaled his realization of what he had accomplished.

Statistics Highlighting Extraordinary Play

Kim's performance in the second round was characterized by outstanding iron play; he gained over 3.7 strokes on approach shots against the field. Additionally, his remarkable putting skills were evident, as he rolled in over 145 feet of putts, achieving nearly 6.6 strokes gained with his putter.

Historical Significance and Impact on FedEx Cup Standings

The feat not only adds to Kim's career achievements but also significantly improves his position in the FedEx Cup standings. Entering the week ranked 65th, he aims to reach the 35th position, drastically enhancing his chances for the playoffs after struggling in previous tournaments.

As the first player this season to card a 59, Kim follows last year's sub-60 milestone by Jake Knapp at the Cognizant Classic. TPC Twin Cities had never witnessed a round below 60 until now, marking a noteworthy chapter in its history.

Kim's journey at the 3M Open continues as he enjoys a three-shot lead with more players yet to complete their rounds, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
