Michigan State Basketball Emerges as National Title Contender for 2024
Michigan State basketball is gaining recognition as a national title contender with key players returning and a promising roster depth for 2024.
Michigan State Basketball's Title Hopes
The Michigan State Spartans are generating excitement as a considerable contender for the national championship in the upcoming 2024 NCAA basketball season. Building off an impressive previous season where they finished 11th nationally and earned a three-seed in the NCAA Tournament, the program is looking stronger than ever.
Last season, the Spartans opened ranked 22nd in the nation but exceeded expectations. Star point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. led the team, finishing the season with an impressive average of 15 points and 9.4 assists per game. After a heartbreaking Sweet Sixteen exit against UConn, the focus shifts to the returning roster, which has many anticipating a serious run for the title next season.
Key Players Return
The upcoming season will see most of the Michigan State roster return, elevating their status from underdogs to serious contenders. Central to this transformation is Jeremy Fears Jr., who is expected to return for his junior year after declaring for the NBA Draft, leaving his eligibility intact. His performance has already made him a frontrunner for national player of the year, showcasing his skills as a pass-first guard capable of scoring at will.
Seniors like Coen Carr are also set to play a crucial role. Carr enjoyed the best season of his career last year, averaging 12 points while shooting 52% from the field. His impending senior season comes with expectations to excel further, cementing his place as one of the best forwards in the Big Ten.
Adding depth to the roster, sophomores Jordan Scott and Cam Ward return after promising freshmen seasons. Additionally, the Spartans will welcome back Kaleb Glenn, who missed last season due to injury, adding much-needed experience.
Strong Incoming Class
The Spartans' incoming recruiting class is generating excitement with the arrival of McDonald's All-American Josiah Jervis, noted for his scoring versatility. The class further strengthens the roster with center Ethan Taylor, guard CJ Medlock Jr., and forward Julius Avent.
A Critical Transfer
To address their needs in the frontcourt, the Spartans secured a significant addition via the transfer portal—7-foot-2 center Anton Bonte from Charlotte. Bonte’s arrival is expected to fill the gap left by graduated players Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper. His physical presence is anticipated to bolster Michigan State’s defense, offering legitimate shot-blocking and offensive threats, especially with his ability to stretch the floor.
With Bonte in position, Michigan State appears to have formidable answers at every spot on the court, setting a solid foundation for their pursuit of national glory. As ESPN projected the Spartans as a 1-seed alongside top programs like Florida and Duke, the excitement continues to build around what promises to be an electrifying season ahead for Michigan State basketball.
