Microsoft in Talks with Anthropic for Custom AI Chip Supply

Microsoft is reportedly engaging in discussions to supply its custom artificial intelligence (AI) chips, known as the Maia 200 processors, to the AI research firm Anthropic. This move comes on the heels of a significant $5 billion investment Microsoft made in Anthropic last November. According to sources familiar with the negotiations, the Maia chips, which boast the capability to run OpenAI's advanced GPT-5.2 model, have yet to be integrated into Microsoft's Azure cloud services.

Context of the Negotiations

An arrangement between Microsoft and Anthropic would mark a notable development for Microsoft, which is seeking to strengthen its position in the competitive cloud AI market, particularly as it trails behind rivals such as Amazon and Google. Microsoft unveiled its second-generation Maia chips earlier in January; however, these chips remain unavailable through its Azure cloud platform, leading to heightened anticipation around the potential deal with Anthropic.

Anthropic's Growing Compute Needs

Reports reveal that Anthropic has been experiencing challenges related to computing capacity as its AI solutions, including the Claude assistant and Claude Code, gain traction. Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, acknowledged at a recent event that the company has faced significant difficulties with computing resources.

Additionally, the partnership's feasibility has been reinforced by Anthropic's commitment to invest heavily in Azure, planning to allocate $30 billion for cloud services. Earlier this week, it was disclosed that Anthropic would pay $1.25 billion per month to SpaceX for computing power through May 2029, emphasizing the urgency of its computing requirements.

Anthropic’s Current Partnerships

Historically, Anthropic has relied heavily on NVIDIA GPUs to power its generative AI models. Furthermore, it has recently entered agreements with Amazon Web Services to utilize custom Trainium chips in a long-term contract valued at over $100 billion. Anthropic is also poised to use Google’s tensor processing units (TPUs) as part of its strategy to enhance its AI capabilities.

Microsoft’s AI Innovations

Microsoft's Maia 200, which is currently operational in data centers located in Arizona and Iowa, promises around 30% greater efficiency in processing tokens per dollar compared to the most recent chips in its lineup, according to statements made by CEO Satya Nadella during the company’s earnings call in April.

Despite the ongoing discussions, neither Microsoft nor Anthropic has provided official comments regarding the potential agreement, leaving industry watchers eager for updates as the landscape in AI technology continues to evolve rapidly.
