Modders Uncover Method to Play PS5 Games on Xbox Consoles

A new emulator called PS5X allows Xbox Series X players to run select PS5 games, albeit with performance issues as it remains in development.

Xbox Players Can Now Experience PS5 Games

In an intriguing development for the gaming community, modder Devran Cosmo Uenal has created a prototype emulator named PS5X, which facilitates the playing of select PlayStation 5 (PS5) games on the Xbox Series X console. Although performance remains limited, the development signals an exciting possibility for cross-console gaming experiences.

What is PS5X?

PS5X is an early emulator derived from the open-source KytyPS5 emulator initially designed for PC. Uenal adapted this software for the Xbox platform, successfully running a small selection of PS5 titles. However, while impressive for an early project, the emulator currently suffers from performance issues and a modest library of playable games.

In essence, an emulator tricks a game into believing it is running on the intended hardware by mimicking its components. This allows users to enjoy titles from one console on another, thereby expanding the gaming options available to them.

Legal Implications of Emulation

Emulators operate in a complex legal landscape. While creating emulators is generally permissible as it doesn’t violate copyright on its own, downloading games without proper ownership constitutes copyright infringement. Players seeking to utilize PS5X will need to ensure they possess the games they wish to emulate.

Current Capabilities of PS5X

As PS5X is still in its infancy, the number of games it can run is quite limited. Uenal's YouTube channel showcases titles such as Gex Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd, Marvel Cosmic Invasion, and Quake 2 among its early offerings. While these titles are playable, they frequently exhibit glitches and performance drops, indicative of a work in progress.

In Uenal's gameplay footage, Quake 2 demonstrates fluctuating frame rates between 20 and 40 frames per second, far below what players typically expect for seamless gameplay.

Potential for Future Development

There are hints that larger titles may soon be included in PS5X’s library. Uenal has shared updates on testing bigger games such as Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, Grand Theft Auto 5, and Gran Turismo 7. However, one major challenge lies in graphics rendering since the PS5 utilizes the Vulkan graphic API, whereas the Xbox systems rely on Microsoft's DirectX.

As the PC version of KytyPS5 continues to evolve, it’s likely that PS5X will also improve. The original emulator has made significant strides, with reports of smoother performance for heavy hitters like Astro Bot and Demon's Souls, albeit still at lower frame rates during play.

Availability of the Emulator

Currently, PS5X is not publicly available; however, there are plans for its future release. Once it becomes accessible, Xbox owners will be able to install it via the developer mode feature on their consoles, which allows for the testing of custom software.

As this modding project develops, enthusiasts are watching closely, intrigued by the possibilities that may arise from the growing intersection of gaming platforms. The potential for cross-console gaming grows more tangible every day, thanks to the innovative work of the modding community.
