Natalie Sago Becomes Third Female Referee in NBA Playoffs History

Natalie Sago has been chosen as the third female referee in NBA playoff history, marking a significant achievement for women in sports officiating.

Natalie Sago's Historic Appointment

In a landmark moment for gender representation in sports, Natalie Sago has been selected as one of 36 officials for the NBA playoffs this year. This makes her the third woman ever to officiate in the postseason, following in the footsteps of trailblazers Violet Palmer and Ashley Moyer-Gleich.

Sago, who boasts over 400 NBA games under her belt, received the news while at the airport in Salt Lake City. Initially fearing it might be a call regarding a prior game's officiating error, she was pleasantly surprised to learn of her historic appointment.

Excitement and Honor

"I see his name pop up and I was like: 'Oh boy, here we go. Did we screw something up in the game last night in Utah?'" Sago recounted about receiving the news from Albert Sanders, the NBA's executive in charge of referee operations. "But then that phone call turned out to be a pretty awesome phone call."

With fewer than half of NBA referees appointed for playoff games, Sago had been eagerly awaiting her opportunity since being promoted to the league's full-time staff in 2018. She, along with Moyer-Gleich, became one of the first few women to achieve this status, paving the way for future female referees.

Advocating for Equality

Monty McCutchen, who oversees referee development for the NBA, highlighted the importance of meritocracy in officiating regardless of gender. "When you're on a high wire with no net under you and you're depending on the person to catch you, you don't really care what gender they are," he said. "What you care about is whether they've been trained properly, and whether you can trust that they will be there for you when you need them."

Sago expressed her hope that her inclusion signals a shift toward normalizing female officials in the NBA. "It's such an honor," she said. "I couldn't be more excited and ready to just put on a performance for the other women coming behind me and all the young little girls that are going to be watching the playoffs."

A Step Forward for Women in Sports

Palmer officiated nine playoff games from 2006 to 2012, while Moyer-Gleich participated in two playoff games the previous year. Sago's participation marks the 12th playoff assignment for a woman in NBA history, signaling a promising future for female referees in the league.

Reflecting on her journey, Sago stated, "As long as we can do the work and do it well... I just want us all to be NBA referees. I don't want to be known as, 'Oh, you're the fifth female hired in the NBA ever.' We're all the same people. We do the same job."

Looking Ahead

This year's playoff referees include an established list of seasoned officials alongside Sago, highlighting the competitive nature of such appointments. As the NBA continues to evolve, Sago's groundbreaking role could inspire a new generation of women in sports officiating.

Selected officials for the postseason also feature Ray Acosta, Brent Barnaky, Curtis Blair, and many others, forming a diverse and experienced officiating team that serves as the backbone of the league's integrity.
