New York City to Offer Free World Cup Fan Events Across All Boroughs
All five boroughs of New York City will host free World Cup fan events, promoting accessibility for all fans to experience the matches.
Free Fan Events Across NYC Boroughs
New York City is set to offer a series of free fan events during the upcoming World Cup, announced Mayor Zohran Mamdani. This initiative aims to ensure that all fans can enjoy the tournament without the financial burden of ticket prices and transportation costs.
Locations and Activities
The free events will take place in all five boroughs, allowing fans from various neighborhoods to participate in the excitement. Key locations include:
- Rockefeller Center, Manhattan
- Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Queens
- Brooklyn Bridge Park, Brooklyn
- A shopping center near Yankee Stadium, Bronx
- A minor league baseball stadium in Staten Island
Fans can expect a lively atmosphere with watch parties for matches and other festivities scheduled throughout the tournament.
Special Event in New Jersey
In addition to the free events in New York, a separate fan event will be hosted at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. However, this event will have an entry fee of $10.
Accessibility and Transportation Concerns
Mamdani, who is a passionate football fan himself, emphasized the importance of accessibility. "Every fan should be able to watch the greatest tournament on earth without dipping into their savings," he stated during a press conference alongside New York Governor Kathy Hochul.
With World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium starting June 13, transport officials have indicated that those planning to travel to the stadium from NYC should prepare for exorbitant round-trip train fares, expected to be around $150. This is a stark contrast to the usual $12.90 fare for the approximately 14 km (9-mile) journey from Manhattan to East Rutherford. Given that most fans will likely rely on public transport, it’s predicted that around 40,000 fans will use mass transit for each match.
MetLife Stadium is slated to host eight matches, including the thrilling finals on July 19, featuring major footballing nations like Brazil, France, Germany, and England among others in the group stages.
