OU's Faith Torrez Captures NCAA All-Around Gymnastics Title

In a surprising comeback, Oklahoma's Faith Torrez wins the NCAA all-around gymnastics title, leading her team to the finals.

Faith Torrez's Remarkable Comeback

In a stunning turn of events at the NCAA gymnastics championships in Fort Worth, Texas, Faith Torrez from Oklahoma claimed the all-around title with an impressive score of 39.7875. This victory was particularly remarkable given her struggles with injuries throughout the season, which had led many to overlook her as a contender.

A Surprising Start to the Championship

Entering the semifinals, Torrez had not participated in all four events during the season due to her injury issues, competing primarily on the uneven bars and balance beam since February. With her unexpected entry into the all-around, Torrez stunned both herself and spectators by securing the highest individual accolade in NCAA gymnastics.

"If you would have [told] me probably two and a half weeks ago that I would be in this position right now... I’d probably laugh at you," Torrez remarked after the ceremony, emphasizing her disbelief and gratitude for her achievement.

Coach K.J. Kindler's Support

Torrez’s coach, K.J. Kindler, shared insights into her preparation, noting Torrez's initiative to resume training on the floor after the SEC championships just weeks earlier. Kindler praised Torrez's resilience and natural talent, stating, "All the credit goes to the athlete in the arena who made that decision and felt comfortable enough and strong enough with her body to do that."

Competing Against the Best

Torrez's remarkable performance not only earned her the title but also played a pivotal role in leading the Oklahoma Sooners to a team score of 198.3000, propelling them into the championship meet. She narrowly outscored LSU's Kailin Chio, who finished second with a score of 39.6125. Florida's eMjae Frazier rounded out the top three.

Day of High Drama

The championship day was filled with intense competition and emotion. The afternoon session saw Florida, the reigning SEC champions, secure their place in the championship with ease, while LSU had a climactic battle to maintain their position against a resurgent Georgia team. Meanwhile, Torrez’s Oklahoma squad dominated the night session from the start, establishing a clear lead and never looking back.

Despite UCLA's struggles, which resulted in the team missing out on the championship meet, Minnesota celebrated a historic achievement by qualifying for its first NCAA championship meet. Coach Jenny Hansen expressed her pride in her team's performance, highlighting their steady belief and execution throughout the day.

Individual Event Highlights

Several gymnasts excelled beyond the all-around title. Keira Wells, Torrez’s teammate, shined on vault, while Florida's Riley McCusker celebrated her first national championship on bars. Brooklyn Rowray of Minnesota won the beam title, marking an unforgettable night for her school.
