Russia Expands Military Forces

Russian President Vladimir Putin has officially ordered a significant expansion of the nation’s military personnel, raising the total to 2,441,630, which includes 1,550,500 active servicemen. This development follows ongoing heavy losses in the Ukraine conflict as the war enters a new phase.

According to a decree published early this week on Russia’s official legal information website, this latest increase of 15,500 active troops marks the fourth such order issued this year. The Kremlin has not provided specific reasoning for this military mobilization, leading analysts to speculate about its implications for the ongoing war effort against Ukraine.

Ukrainian Response

In response to the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that more than 8,000 North Korean troops are currently stationed within Russia. He further warned that preparations are underway to deploy an additional 10,000 North Korean soldiers.

"In addition, preparations are underway to deploy another 10,000 troops – they are being selected for training and subsequent deployment to Russia," Zelenskyy stated via social media.

Zelenskyy also underscored a troubling aspect of this partnership, noting that Russia is aiding North Korea’s military capabilities in return, notably through the establishment of drone production facilities for Shahed-type attack drones.

The relationship between Russia and North Korea has strengthened notably in recent months. During a summit held in Beijing last year, Putin commended North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for sending soldiers to support Russia, praising their courage and heroism in combat.
