Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has revealed that the company is on the cusp of a technological shift, developing more than 40 new AI-powered devices that could fundamentally change how users interact with applications. In an illuminating interview with CNBC, Amon articulated the potential for AI agents to replace traditional apps, making devices like smart glasses and wearable tech central to this evolution.

The Role of AI Agents

Amon envisions a future where AI agents function as advanced digital assistants capable of executing complex tasks that go beyond the capacities of current applications. He highlighted that these agents could seamlessly retrieve information, such as banking transaction details, without requiring users to navigate through various app interfaces. "Apps are not dead, but they are going to change," Amon stated, further emphasizing that the development of these agents represents a pivotal shift in how tasks are performed on devices.

The Future of Wearable Technology

As Qualcomm forges ahead with its innovative designs, Amon expressed optimism about the burgeoning market for smart glasses. He projected that shipments could leap from multiple tens of millions to possibly hundreds of millions in the coming years. This growth could position smart glasses as a competitor to smartphones, which shipped 1.26 billion units in 2025, reflecting a growing consumer interest in wearable technology that can integrate AI capabilities.

New Entrants in the Hardware Market

Amon also noted that the rise of AI agents may open doors for new companies to enter the consumer hardware market. With the acquisition of io, a startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, OpenAI is one example of how tech firms are venturing into hardware to better harness data for training AI models.

"All the devices that we wear become endpoints for agents, and these AI companies understand the importance of accessing this data to create bespoke user experiences," Amon explained.

Evolving Chip Technology

To accommodate the trend of smaller and more powerful devices, Qualcomm is updating its chip technology roadmap. Amon emphasized that existing devices are not equipped for future demands, asserting that the advancements in the AI space necessitate a complete overhaul of current technologies. He noted, "Our entire roadmap is in a process of upgrade right now."

This commitment to innovation reflects Qualcomm's determination to remain at the forefront of the AI revolution within the tech industry.

As the landscape evolves, major players like Apple and Samsung may need to adapt their strategies to maintain their competitive edge in a market increasingly dominated by AI agents and wearable technologies.
