Runna Enhances Training Plans with New Adapt for Heat Feature
Runna's Adapt for Heat feature helps users manage training in extreme weather with hourly forecasts and personalized pacing adjustments.
Introduction
The running app Runna has unveiled an innovative feature aimed at supporting outdoor athletes during the challenging summer heat. Named Adapt for Heat, this feature empowers users to modify their training plans according to local weather conditions, thereby ensuring better performance and safety during workouts.
Features of Adapt for Heat
This newly introduced feature is timely as the summer months see a significant increase in temperatures due to climate change. According to Runna, about 80% of its members have either skipped workouts or made significant adjustments to their training regimes because of heat. Here’s a breakdown of what the Adapt for Heat feature includes:
Color-Coded Hourly Forecast
Runna provides a color-coded hourly forecast that highlights the hottest and coolest times of the day. This allows runners to select the most optimal training hours to avoid peak heat conditions.
Adjusted Pacing
Hot weather directly impacts a runner's performance. The Runna app has an assigned coach feature that recalibrates a runner's pacing based on current weather conditions. This ensures that athletes do not push themselves too hard during challenging temperatures.
Increased Personalization
Runna’s training plans are already personalized based on various metrics like pacing. With the new feature, the app will now include feels-like temperatures to further tailor training sessions, improving user experience and safety.
Importance of Weather Adaptation
As global climate change leads to hotter summers filled with additional risks like wildfires, outdoor athletes need to adapt their training to avoid health hazards. Traditional advice suggests limiting workouts to morning or evening and maintaining proper hydration. However, Runna's innovative features simplify this process by directly integrating weather considerations into training plans.
Comparison with Other Training Tools
Unlike Runna, several other running apps and wearables provide limited adjustments based on weather. For example, some Garmin watches can account for heat and altitude's impact on performance through their heat acclimation feature, which modifies VO2 max estimates. Another innovative device, the Core Body Temperature Sensor, enables real-time tracking of core body temperature during workouts, providing critical insights during extreme weather conditions.
Future Updates
Looking ahead, Runna is set to enhance its platform further with additional features slated for release later this month. These will include Upcoming Plans, allowing users to manage multiple training regimens based on different events throughout the year, and a revamped version of the Post-Race Recovery Plans, designed to assist runners in safely returning to training after races.
The Adapt for Heat feature is now available on the Runna app, while the upcoming enhancements promise to provide athletes with even more tools for effective training amidst the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.
