Samoa PM Apologizes After Nazi Salute Video Surfaces

Samoa's Prime Minister apologizes after video reveals him leading a Nazi salute at a family gathering.

Controversial Video Emerges

Samoa's Prime Minister La'auli Leuatea Schmidt found himself at the center of controversy after a video surfaced showing him leading a Nazi salute during a family reunion in 2007. The clip, which was published by the Samoa Observer, displayed Schmidt commanding a small group of family members to raise their right hands and chant, “Heil Hitler.” This incident has sparked outrage and serious condemnation from various quarters, forcing the Prime Minister to issue a public apology.

Details of the Incident

The footage was recorded during a family gathering on the island of Savai‘i when Schmidt was serving as an MP and deputy speaker of parliament. It was reported that Schmidt, holding a microphone, initiated a light-hearted call-and-response exchange with those present, which culminated in the Nazi salute. Approximately a dozen individuals in the video appeared to comply with his directive.

Radio New Zealand confirmed the authenticity of the footage, which became highly controversial shortly after its release.

Schmidt's Apology

Addressing the issue, Schmidt expressed regret over the inappropriate gesture and condemned the ideologies it symbolizes. "I reject Nazism, antisemitism, racism and all forms of political extremism," he stated in his apology. He emphasized that the actions during that gathering do not reflect his personal beliefs or the values of his administration.

Schmidt acknowledged the potential harm caused by the resurfaced footage and assured the public that he remains committed to combating all forms of discrimination.

Academic Response

The release of the video provoked critical reactions from historians and academics. Richard Evans, a historian specializing in Nazi Germany, described the footage as "shocking and disturbing". University Professor Anne-Marie Brady highlighted the necessity for Schmidt to clarify and explain his actions further.

Leadership and Future Directions

Since taking office in 2025, Schmidt has shown strong support for Israel, demonstrating his commitment to addressing issues of discrimination and antisemitism. Notably, he wore a Jewish prayer shawl at his swearing-in ceremony and announced plans to establish a Samoan embassy in Jerusalem by the end of 2026, despite the contentious nature of the city's status.

After addressing the incident, Schmidt indicated his intention to focus on pressing economic and social challenges facing his country, reiterating his rejection of extremist ideologies to foster a more inclusive society.
