Sarah Strong’s International Basketball Journey

Sarah Strong, a rising star in women’s college basketball and projected first overall pick in the 2028 WNBA Draft, is drawing from her rich European heritage as she embarks on her junior season with the University of Connecticut (UConn). Born in Madrid to professional basketball players Allison Feaster and Danny Strong, she attributes her skill set and understanding of the game to the unique influences of her upbringing abroad.

Learning the Game Early

Strong’s initial exposure to basketball came at a young age, rooted in her experiences at Club Baloncesto Alcobendas, where her mother played from 2013 to 2016. She spent most of her childhood soaking in the fundamentals of the game while watching her parents play and practice.

“Just being able to watch [my mom] and the professionals play, and being at most of the practices and getting to watch and learn was very helpful,” Strong shared.

Upon moving to the United States at the age of 10, she soon emerged as the top basketball recruit in her high school class, representing Team USA with multiple gold medals and building a remarkable collegiate career at UConn.

A Different Perspective on Basketball

Her experiences in Europe have equipped Strong with a distinct view of the game, one that blends European techniques with the American style of play.

“I think it taught me a different side of basketball. Overseas, they're focused more on fundamentals. A lot of the smartest players are European, so I think I gained a lot of knowledge playing over there and watching my mom and dad play,” she explained.

Strong's dual citizenship with France and her multilingual abilities further enrich her basketball journeys, enabling her to connect with players from various backgrounds. At UConn, she combines her international experiences with those of her teammates from countries including Egypt, Ecuador, and Ireland.

Embracing Leadership and Challenges

As she prepares for a season following the disappointment of a Final Four defeat to South Carolina, Strong is stepping into a leadership role within the Huskies' roster, emphasizing a collaborative and adaptive culture among her diverse teammates.

“My role is definitely changing. I've become more of a leader -- vocally, and on the court, by example,” she noted.

With potential national championship aspirations on the horizon, Strong aims to guide her team, leveraging her unique skill set and insights gained from the international basketball stage. “All of our international players are really smart. They do things where I'm like, 'Oh wow, I never thought of that,'” she stated, underscoring the strategic depth added to the UConn roster.
