In a revealing interview with Bloomberg, Signal President Meredith Whittaker addressed the growing popularity and use of AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Claude. Whittaker cautioned users against viewing these tools as confidants or friends.

The Illusion of Friendship

Whittaker made it clear that AI chatbots are not conscious beings nor sentient interlocutors. She emphasized that while these tools can assist in various tasks, they lack the awareness and understanding that human interaction offers. "These are not your friends. These are not conscious beings. These are not sentient interlocutors," Whittaker stated, urging for a critical perspective on their use.

Privacy Concerns Surrounded AI Tools

Whittaker underscored significant privacy implications associated with AI chatbots. She expressed concern regarding how these applications could access sensitive personal information across multiple platforms. For instance, she highlighted the risks of these chatbots managing tasks like holiday shopping. In her view, allowing AI tools to infiltrate private communications, such as family group chats, would lead to unregulated access to personal data, including credit card details, home addresses, and calendars.

"What you’ve just described is a system with very pervasive access across multiple applications and services," she explained. In this context, she mentioned that such integration with Signal could constitute a “backdoor” into private messaging systems.

AI's Role in Creative Processes

Whittaker also touched on the intersection of AI and creative processes. Although she occasionally utilizes AI tools for administrative purposes, like formatting documents, she refrains from asking them substantive questions. She stated, “I don’t ask them questions. I’m very serious about my thinking and writing, and I don’t want the process of working through an idea to be foreclosed or eclipsed by the response of a system that’s averaging what’s already out there.”

This highlights her belief that reliance on AI for complex thinking undermines the depth and individuality of human creativity.
