SpaceX has officially launched the new Starlink V5 home dish, showcasing a range of improvements over the previous V4 model. While the latest dish does not enhance data speeds significantly, it is designed to be smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient, helping to optimize installation processes and reduce energy expenses.

Key Features of the V5 Dish

Weighing just 2.4 pounds and measuring 5.12 x 12.05 x 1.34 inches, the new V5 dish is considerably lighter and more compact than the V4, which tipped the scales at 6.5 pounds with dimensions of 23.4 x 15.1 x 1.5 inches. This new design aims to simplify installation for users while enhancing the overall aesthetic of satellite dishes.

In terms of power consumption, the V5 operates between 35 to 50 watts, making it much more energy-efficient compared to the V4 model, which required between 75 and 100 watts. This shift not only lowers operational costs for users but also aligns with growing environmental concerns surrounding energy consumption in technology.

Pricing and Availability

Currently, the V5 home dish is available to customers in select regions of the United States under the $55 monthly Residential plan. This plan is specifically targeted at lower-tier customers, providing access at an affordable rate. Notably, it appears that the V5 is initially being offered solely with this basic plan, as residents of places like Drummond, Montana have reported receiving the dish integrated with the 100 Mbps Residential plan. The more expensive Residential and Residential Max plans continue to support the V4 model for now.

Performance Comparison

Despite the changes, users should note that the V5 dish has a data rate of 375+ Mbps, slightly lower than the 400+ Mbps of the V4. However, with the introduction of the V5, Starlink continues its path to improve the user experience in satellite internet. As explained by SpaceX, "Starlink V5 features a smaller form factor, a lightweight design, and superior power efficiency compared to the V4."

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, Starlink plans to manufacture the V5 home dish in significantly higher volumes than the previous models. Elon Musk has highlighted the company's ambition to further develop its next-generation Starlink Mobile network, expected to launch in mid-2027. This upcoming service is projected to offer speeds of up to 150 Mbps, with a user experience paralleling that of high-performing 5G networks. Moreover, Starlink has revealed a new Premium performance dish valued at $2,000, engineered to accommodate gigabit internet speeds.
