Stephen Fry Files Lawsuit Against CogX Conference After Stage Fall
Sir Stephen Fry is suing CogX for £100,000, claiming negligence after a stage fall left him with serious injuries at the tech conference.
Stephen Fry's Legal Action Following Stage Accident
Sir Stephen Fry has taken legal action against the organizers of the CogX tech conference, seeking damages totaling up to £100,000 after he suffered multiple injuries from a fall offstage. The incident occurred during the event held at the O2 Arena in London in September 2023, where Fry was delivering a keynote speech.
Details of the Incident
The acclaimed author and broadcaster, aged 68, recounted the harrowing experience on Claudia Winkleman's BBC Radio 2 show. After concluding his presentation on Artificial Intelligence, Fry made a bow and mistakenly walked off a section of the stage that lacked a safety barrier, resulting in a fall of approximately six feet onto a concrete floor. He sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg, hip, pelvis, and multiple rib fractures. Fortunately, Fry noted, he did not incur any damage to his spine or skull during the fall, which could have resulted in even more severe consequences.
Legal Proceedings and Statements
In the court documents filed on his behalf, Fry's claims highlight the alleged negligence of the conference's organizers, CogX Festival Ltd, and the creative agency Blonstein Events Ltd. According to these documents, the stage and backstage areas where the incident took place were inadequately lit and poorly designed, failing to prevent falls from height.
A spokesperson for CogX Festival Ltd expressed deep concern for Fry's recovery while refraining from commenting pending ongoing legal proceedings. Meanwhile, Blonstein Events, named in the lawsuit, has denied liability, stating they are not responsible for the mishap. Company director Sara Blonstein emphasized that they had not yet been formally notified of the lawsuit but remained confident in their impending defense if court proceedings are served.
The Pursuit of Accountability
Keith Barrett, Fry's lawyer from Fieldfisher, has stated that the necessity of court proceedings is unfortunate, highlighting the defendants' denial of Fry's account. Barrett has called upon the court to clarify liability regarding Fry's injuries and losses, underscoring the seriousness of the claims.
Fry's lawsuit reflects a broader concern regarding safety standards at live events, particularly in high-profile settings like tech conferences where audiences expect reliable safety measures. As the legal situation unfolds, all parties involved await the court's deliberation on the matter.
