Sumitomo CEO Shingo Ueno Highlights 'Kosoryoku' as Key to Future Innovation in AI Era
Sumitomo CEO Shingo Ueno emphasizes the importance of 'kosoryoku' in harnessing AI effectively for future innovation.
The Value of 'Kosoryoku' in Today’s AI-Driven World
In an era marked by the rapid advancements of artificial intelligence (AI), the significance of human creativity and foresight remains paramount. Shingo Ueno, the CEO of Sumitomo Corporation, one of Japan's largest conglomerates with a market cap of approximately $55 billion, elaborated on this notion during a recent interview with Business Insider.
Understanding 'Kosoryoku'
Central to Ueno’s philosophy is the Japanese term ‘kosoryoku,’ which translates to the ability to envision future possibilities that do not yet exist. He asserts that while AI serves as a remarkable tool for enhancing workplace efficiency and retrieving historical data, it fundamentally lacks the capacity to imagine and conceptualize new futures.
"Generative AI is helping me a lot to improve my efficiency. I'm fully utilizing it," stated Ueno, underscoring the benefits of AI in improving operational effectiveness. AI excels at quickly gathering information from past experiences, which has streamlined decision-making processes.
Limitations of AI in Decision-Making
Despite the advantages AI provides, Ueno cautioned against over-reliance on its capabilities for strategic insights. He recounts a personal experience where he sought to make a decision with AI assistance, only to be met with "rubbish answers".
"AI analyzes past data to show us a direction. But it is still based on the past. It can't create the future. It can't really show the vision," Ueno pointed out, emphasizing that AI can analyze historical patterns but lacks the creativity to propose innovative solutions.
Embracing Innovation through Improved Concepts
Developing kosoryoku does not necessitate radical innovations but instead can stem from refining existing ideas. Ueno believes that employees should not feel pressured to invent entirely new concepts. Instead, they can enhance what is already available.
"We don't need to be inventors. We don't need to come up with something completely new. We can start with something that already exists, improve it, and make it our own," he noted, highlighting a practical approach to innovation.
The Importance of Rest for Creativity
Ueno also shared a critical aspect of fostering creativity: rest. He emphasized the importance of stepping away from daily work routines to recharge mentally.
"At the weekend, I basically spend my time without thinking about work. That is extremely important, just resting my head. Then, when I go back to work, I can come up with new ideas," he explained.
Conclusion: The Human Element in a Technological Age
In summary, while AI enables faster data retrieval and operational efficiency, Ueno’s insights remind us of the irreplaceable value of human creativity and the foresight encapsulated in the concept of kosoryoku. As AI technology continues to evolve, the call for innovation grounded in human imagination becomes ever more critical, affirming that while AI can transform industries, it is human vision that will shape their future.
