Surging Options Activity Signals Growing Interest in Meta's AI Ventures
Meta's stock surged 12% as options trading volume spiked, driven by its new AI assistant Muse and subsea cable project Petal.
Surge in Options Trading for Meta
Meta Platforms, Inc. has recently experienced a remarkable increase in options trading, with volumes hitting 4.5 times the average on Monday, celebrating a staggering $3.9 billion exchanged. This surge in trading comes on the heels of a major stock price jump, attributed largely to the launch of its new artificial intelligence personal assistant, Muse.
Rising Stock Value Amid Bullish Sentiment
Shares of Meta soared by 12% on Monday, inching closer to the company’s all-time high recorded in August 2025. This rally marks a notable 21% increase since the unveiling of Muse, which has captured significant market attention. In less than two weeks, Muse has garnered 730,000 downloads, quickly climbing to the top of the app store charts, showcasing consumer appetite for innovative AI tools.
Trading Dynamics and Market Sentiment
Notably, options trading data reveals that over twice as many calls were purchased compared to puts on Monday. Major trading activity highlighted that seven of the top ten trades leaned either bullish or neutral, signifying investors' optimism surrounding Meta's future prospects. Brent Kochuba, founder of SpotGamma, noted the atypically large inflows in options. "It seems like AI hype around their Muse,” he remarked, underlining the growing enthusiasm for AI investments.
However, this bullish trend is coupled with mixed sentiments among traders, as some have begun to take on short positions. Specifically, the largest single transaction recorded involved a short position valued at approximately $20 million through a series of spread trades—a strategy that anticipates a drop in the stock’s value.
The Future with Petal
As part of its strategic expansion into AI, Meta also announced plans to develop a subsea cable, named Petal, aimed at enhancing data transfer capabilities across the Atlantic. This initiative aligns with Meta's broader ambition to strengthen its infrastructure, ensuring a robust foundation for its AI developments and digital services.
Looking ahead, the options market is actively tracking contracts set for expiration in mid-October, particularly for strikes around 775 and 800, indicating keen interest among traders.
In summary, as Meta navigates its innovative AI projects and infrastructure advancements, market participants are keenly adjusting their strategies to reflect the potential and volatility inherent in the new consumer AI landscape.
