In a tragic event on Monday afternoon, a car plowed into a crowd in Leipzig, Germany, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to at least 22 others. The horrifying incident occurred in the busy Grimmaische Straße area, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Response from Authorities
Local officials confirmed that the suspected driver has been arrested, and investigations are currently underway to determine the motive behind this attack. Mayor Burkhard Jung remarked on the situation, indicating that authorities are still gathering information regarding the incident.
In addition, Leipzig’s fire chief Axel Schuh reported that while the injuries sustained by 22 individuals were significant, two victims were in serious condition and required immediate medical attention. To manage the emergency, around 40 firefighters and 40 paramedics were deployed to the scene, supported by two helicopters.
Safety Measures in Place
The police quickly secured the area, reassuring the public that there was no ongoing threat from the driver and that the situation had been stabilized. By 17:35 local time, police declared that the immediate danger had passed, allowing for the area to be cordoned off while investigations began.
Unverified videos circulating on social media depict an emergency helicopter in the vicinity, alongside multiple ambulances attending to victims.
