Uber's Bold Initiative in Autonomous Driving

In a significant move to enhance its autonomous vehicle (AV) capabilities, Uber has announced plans to deploy 500 modified Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles this year. These vehicles will be outfitted with numerous sensors designed to collect real-world driving data, crucial for the development of self-driving technologies.

Enhancing Data Collection with Advanced Technology

According to information shared with TechCrunch, these kitted-out electric vehicles will be utilized to gather an impressive 2 million miles of data each month. This initiative marks a pivotal step for Uber's newly established AV Labs division, which aims to create a robust training dataset for its partners, including Avride, Waymo, and WeRide.

Details of the Vehicle Modifications

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 units will not only be equipped with 14 cameras but also feature eight solid-state lidar sensors and nine radar units. Roush Performance will collaborate with Uber to retrofit these vehicles, ensuring they are adequately prepared for extensive data gathering. The data collected will be processed through Nvidia’s Dual Drive Thor autonomous vehicle computer, enabling high-fidelity data capture.

Goals and Ambitions of Uber's AV Labs Division

Uber's objective goes beyond merely collecting data; the company aims to develop the world's most geographically diverse set of training data for autonomous driving. Success in this endeavor will provide Uber’s AV partners with synchronized, comprehensive data that can be instrumental in training their self-driving software.

Uber has already accumulated significant data from thousands of vehicles equipped with outward-facing cameras across various cities, as well as data from hundreds of Lucid Air vehicles over the last two years. The forthcoming Ioniq 5 vehicles will expand this dataset, enhancing the capabilities of its fleet partners.

A Broader Vision for Autonomous Solutions

The launch of the AV Labs division is part of Uber's broader strategy for integrating autonomous technology into its operations. Earlier this year, the company also introduced Uber Autonomous Solutions, which focuses on the daily management of robotaxis, self-driving trucks, and delivery robots.
