United Airlines Faces Nationwide Delays Due to Technology Outage
Nationwide flight delays hit United Airlines due to a tech outage affecting check-ins and boarding. Operations are now returning to normal.
Major Delays for United Airlines Amid Tech Issue
United Airlines experienced extensive delays on Saturday morning due to a technology outage that impacted its reservation system significantly. Passengers reported disruptions at major airports, including Washington Dulles and Newark Liberty, with many voicing their frustrations on social media.
Nature of the Outage
The outage began around 7:40 a.m. and quickly escalated, resulting in over 430 reports of issues logged by Down Detector, a platform that tracks service interruptions. Customers faced complications with checking in, boarding their flights, and managing their baggage, which left many stranded at terminal gates.
A United Airlines spokesperson confirmed that the reservation system malfunction had been resolved, emphasizing that they were working diligently to restore normal operations. "Our teams are getting our operations back to normal after a technology outage affected contact centers and check-in processes earlier today," the spokesperson stated.
Impact Across the Nation
Reports indicated that flights from New York to San Francisco were among those delayed. The communication breakdown did not affect flights that were already in the air or had departed the gate, according to the airline.
Return to Normalcy
By late morning, the disruption began to ease as the airline advised customers to verify flight statuses through the United app for quick updates.
This incident is not the first technological hiccup for United Airlines; the airline experienced significant operational challenges two years ago following a major tech disturbance linked to a CrowdStrike update, which resulted in thousands of flight cancellations and communication issues between pilots and ground services.
As operations stabilize, United Airlines is working to ensure that such outages do not impact passenger experiences moving forward.
