In a significant development for labor relations in the aviation sector, United Airlines flight attendants have ratified a new five-year contract that includes an impressive average pay raise of 31%. This pivotal agreement, which will affect about 30,000 flight attendants, marks the first pay hike in nearly six years and reflects the changing dynamics of the post-Covid airline industry.
Key Details of the New Contract
The contract has received strong support from union members, with 82% of those voting approving the agreement, as reported by the union. Nearly 90% of flight attendants participated in the voting process, underscoring the importance of this contract to the workforce.
Ken Diaz, president of the United chapter of the Association of Flight Attendants, expressed optimism regarding the contract, stating, "The contract will immediately change the lives of United Flight Attendants, especially our thousands of new hires who have been hired since the pandemic."
Financial Benefits and Quality of Life Improvements
In addition to the substantial pay increases that will come into effect by August, the package includes provisions for back pay totaling approximately $741 million, a historic sum meant to compensate attendants for the previous years of wage stagnation. Furthermore, the new contract mandates boarding pay, ensuring that flight attendants begin earning as passengers board the aircraft—an adjustment from the prior practice of starting their pay only once the boarding door closed.
The contract also addresses quality-of-life concerns, introducing restrictions on red-eye flights and instituting "sit pay" for delays exceeding 2.5 hours. These enhancements reflect ongoing efforts to improve working conditions within the airline industry, acknowledging the increased challenges faced by flight crews over the last few years.

This agreement positions United Airlines as the last major carrier with unionized flight crews to finalize a post-Covid labor agreement.
