Vitamin B3 Supplementation Associated with Decreased Glaucoma Risk

New research shows vitamin B3 may lower the risk of glaucoma in individuals with ocular hypertension.

Vitamin B3 and Decreased Glaucoma Risk

A recent study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology has revealed that nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, might significantly reduce the risk of developing primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) by 66% in individuals suffering from ocular hypertension, a recognized risk factor for this serious eye condition.

Study Overview

Conducted with an extensive data analysis from the electronic medical records of approximately 2,900 participants across 67 healthcare organizations in the United States, half of the participants received nicotinamide supplementation while the other half did not. Over an average follow-up period of 3.7 years, only 51 individuals from the nicotinamide group were diagnosed with POAG, compared to 132 in the control group, highlighting a striking protective effect attributed to this vitamin.

Broader Context of Glaucoma

Glaucoma is among the leading causes of blindness worldwide, affecting around 95 million people globally. Past research has indicated that certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids and dietary nitrates, can potentially lower glaucoma risk. This new study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting the beneficial role of nutritional factors in eye health, particularly focusing on nicotinamide.

Cautions Regarding Nicotinamide Use

Despite the promising findings, nicotinamide remains non-approved as a treatment for glaucoma. Experts urge caution due to potential side effects associated with supplementation, particularly at high doses, which can result in liver toxicity. A joint statement released by the American Glaucoma Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology emphasizes the necessity for healthcare providers to monitor liver function closely when administering higher doses of nicotinamide, particularly as current clinical trials are exploring doses as high as three grams per day.

Potential adverse effects may also include gastrointestinal discomfort, fatigue, and headaches, underscoring the importance of consulting a physician before beginning any supplementation regimen.

Expert Opinions and Recommendations

Dr. Benjamin Bert, a board-certified ophthalmologist who was not involved in the study, noted the significance of these findings in potentially preventing glaucoma in high-risk individuals. He recommends discussing any new supplements with a healthcare provider to ensure safety and efficacy, particularly due to the lack of regulation around supplements compared to prescription medications.

Dr. Ariana Levin, an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, echoed these sentiments, stressing that it is crucial for patients to evaluate the products they purchase and consult with their doctors, especially given the variability in dosing and purity of over-the-counter supplements.

Importance of Glaucoma Prevention

Given the irreversible damage that glaucoma can cause to the optic nerve, experts emphasize the need for preventative strategies. The recent research indicates potential avenues for early intervention, which could benefit individuals at risk of developing the disease. As Dr. Bert highlighted, any advancements in treatment methodologies or preventive strategies are highly valuable in combating glaucoma’s impact on vision health.

Ultimately, while the eight study results are promising, future research aimed at establishing the optimal dosage and safety of nicotinamide supplementation will be essential in evaluating its effectiveness as a plausible preventive measure against glaucoma.
