Bryan Johnson Introduces Quick Test to Determine Your Biological Age

Bryan Johnson reveals a simple balance test to assess biological age during a Business Insider event, supported by research from the Mayo Clinic.

Bryan Johnson’s Innovative Balance Test for Biological Age

At a recent event hosted by Business Insider in San Francisco, longevity entrepreneur Bryan Johnson presented a straightforward test that anyone can try: the one-leg balance test. This assessment serves as a quick and engaging way for individuals to determine their biological age, which may differ from their chronological age.

The Balance Test Explained

Participants in the test close their eyes and see how long they can maintain their balance on one leg. Johnson indicated that this simple exercise can provide insight into one's aging process. As he elucidates, just as age impacts our physical health, it also affects balance capabilities. For instance, if someone can maintain their balance for zero to seven seconds, their biological age could be estimated to be between 60 and 80 years. Meanwhile, achieving balance for seven to 15 seconds suggests an age bracket of 40 to 60 years, and 15 to 30 seconds indicates a biological age of 20 to 40 years.

“As you age, your brain atrophies, and your ability to maintain your balance goes away. That’s why when you get older, if you fall down, it’s no good,” said Johnson.

Research Behind the Test

Johnson's test isn't arbitrary; it echoes findings from a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, which examined balance as a measure of frailty in individuals over the age of 50. Published in 2024, this study found that one-leg balance time was significantly impacted by the participants’ age. The researchers deemed this test a valid measure of frailty, independence, and risk of falls.

Unlike Johnson's public demonstration, the Mayo Clinic study did not include individuals under 50, nor did it provide direct correlations between balance time and biological age.

Caveats to Consider

Experts at institutions like the Cleveland Clinic caution against relying solely on this balance test for a thorough assessment of longevity and balance. While helpful as a quick indicator, the test is not a comprehensive evaluation of balance capabilities.

Despite these limitations, Johnson's method offers a practical approach for individuals to gauge their biological age in a fun and engaging way. The ease with which one can perform the test makes it accessible, encouraging healthy conversations around aging and longevity.

As for personal results, participants may find their biological age doesn’t rack up with how they feel. For many, such as those who perform well on balance tests, the results may affirm their health status is aligned with their lifestyle choices.
