Kathryn Bricken: From Corporate Life to Building a Cookie Dough Empire at 50
Meet Kathryn Bricken, who started Doughlicious at 50, overcoming challenges to build a multimillion-dollar cookie dough empire without a day off.
A New Start Over at 50
Kathryn Bricken's journey began at the unexpected age of 50, a time most consider for relaxation and retirement. Instead, the Miami-born entrepreneur launched Doughlicious, turning her passion for food into a multimillion-dollar cookie dough brand. Bricken's story underscores the power of resilience and determination, showcasing how she transformed a simple side project into a thriving venture.
The Road to Doughlicious
Before Doughlicious, Bricken carved out a successful career in corporate America, working as a Legislative Correspondent on Capitol Hill and serving in healthcare policy. However, her love for baking was always present, nurtured by fond memories of cooking with her mother and early jobs at Publix grocery store.
When she became a mother of three young children, Bricken sought a flexible job that aligned with her busy life. This led her to create intricate cakes and cookies from her garage while her children napped, where she began her culinary journey focusing on both beauty and health.
Turning Obstacles into Opportunities
Bricken’s move to London in 2008 introduced her to the British market, which lacked the gooey, indulgent cookies she loved. Recognizing a gap for American-style cookie dough and baked goods, she embarked on her entrepreneurial path with relentless enthusiasm. Working 20-hour days, Bricken faced personal challenges, including a significant health scare when diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer.
Despite undergoing a lumpectomy and radiation, her commitment to Doughlicious never wavered. "Having a focus such as Doughlicious was a blessing," she reflected, as her work provided a much-needed distraction from her health challenges.
A Flourishing Business
Today, Doughlicious has become a household name, with products sold in major retailers like Tesco, Morrisons, and Whole Foods across the UK and the US. Over the years, Bricken has scaled her business from a home-based operation to leading a dedicated team of 50 employees. From mixing dough to shipping orders, she has transitioned from hands-on to a leadership role while maintaining her passion for creating high-quality cookie dough products.
Maintaining Work-Life Balance
Despite the demands of running a successful brand, Bricken strives for a semblance of work-life balance. Her weekday routine typically begins at 6:40 a.m., filled with emails and dog walks, before heading into the office until late evening.
She admits that taking time off is challenging: “I rarely take a vacation,” she said. “Being a founder is a 24/7 responsibility.” Her commitment is evident; she is rarely absent from her duties even during personal-time requests. This dedication has proven to be a necessary ingredient in her recipe for success.
Looking Ahead
As Doughlicious continues to grow, Bricken remains focused on her mission to expand awareness of her brand globally. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, exemplifying how determination and passion can lead to significant achievements, regardless of age or circumstances.
Ultimately, Kathryn Bricken demonstrates that it’s never too late to dream big and achieve success, particularly when fueled by unwavering resolve and creativity.
