Internal Memo Highlights Scheduling Problems

An internal memo obtained by Business Insider sheds light on the difficulties causing these widespread cancellations. According to the memo, issued by Ryan Gumm, Delta's senior vice president of Flight Operations, there has been a significant decline in pilots volunteering for extra flights. Acceptance rates for these additional trips have plummeted to just 2%, from an average of about 37% in previous years. This decline hampers Delta's ability to address staffing shortages effectively and fill last-minute flight gaps.

The Inefficiency of Scheduling System 23.M.7

To manage these operational gaps, Delta employs a complex scheduling system internally referred to as 23.M.7. Initially implemented for rare emergencies, this system is now being utilized far more frequently—up to 15 times more than last year. While it was designed to expedite the coverage of unstaffed trips, it has proven inefficient, often compelling the airline to pay pilots premium rates for last-minute trip assignments.

Gumm noted in the memo that such operational reliance is unprecedented and unsustainable, with ongoing negotiations with the pilots' union to revise the contract's scheduling stipulations.

Escalating Cancellations

Flight operations-related cancellations have surged beyond ten times historical averages, now constituting 35% of Delta's mainline cancellations. This marks a substantial increase from only 7% last year. Cancellations linked to staffing issues differ from those caused by weather or other external factors, emphasizing an urgent need for Delta to improve operational reliability.

Customer Impact and Compensation Measures

Passengers experiencing cancellations are guaranteed assistance from Delta in rebooking flights at no additional charge, along with potential compensation, which may include travel credits, hotel accommodations, or cash reimbursements.
