Dubai Student Remains Unshaken Amid Missile Interceptions
Despite missile interceptions during his father's birthday, Dubai student William Harper feels safe and plans to study at the University of Warwick.
Resilience Amid Tensions
William Harper, an 18-year-old student residing in Dubai, shared his experiences during a series of missile interceptions that occurred while he was celebrating his father's birthday in March. Despite the alarming events unfolding around him, Harper expressed a strong sense of safety and a desire to continue building his future in Dubai.
During the celebration in a nearby port city, Harper witnessed streaks of light illuminating the night sky as missile interceptions unfolded. "It was a surreal experience," he said, recalling the moment with his family, where restaurant staff urged guests to remain calm as flashes and trails filled the sky without causing any damage on the ground.
Facing the Unexpected
The situation escalated earlier that day, as Harper's family heard reports of missile activity near Abu Dhabi. Despite concern and uncertainty regarding potential road closures, they decided to proceed with their staycation plans. "Honestly, at the time, I didn't feel scared. Watching the interceptions was interesting — there was no visible damage," he noted.
However, the sounds of powerful explosions later shook their home, revealing the sheer force of the interceptions. Still, Harper emphasized that life in Dubai continued as normal for his family while the international media painted a different picture. "A lot of coverage made it seem like Dubai had become unsafe overnight. That wasn't really the case. My family felt safe, and life, in many ways, carried on."
Education Disrupted
Despite the attacks, the most significant disruption for Harper was not the fear of conflict but the impact on his education. Harper moved to Dubai at the age of 15 from London, after spending 12 years in Singapore. As he prepared for his A-level examinations — crucial assessments for UK university admissions — he faced unexpected challenges when schools nationwide shifted to online learning and ultimately canceled exams due to the ongoing situation.
"We finished learning all the course content but were deep into revision when everything happened. I can't say I was entirely disappointed as it eased some of the pressures that come with final exams."
Normalcy Returns
After a brief pause in extracurricular activities, many aspects of life, including soccer training, resumed. His dad, who works in media, continued his routine, while his mother's banking job required her to remain at home temporarily as safety concerns arose in the financial sector.
Graduation plans are still on the table, with events such as prom expected to occur as scheduled. Harper noted that his friends' families displayed different reactions — while most stayed put, a few left for the holidays, and some made longer-term adjustments.
Looking Ahead
With his sights set on the University of Warwick in the UK, Harper remains optimistic about his academic future. "If I meet the grades, I hope to study at Warwick, which is a prominent university located about an hour-and-a-half train ride from London."
Reflecting on potential career opportunities, he stated, "I would definitely consider working in Dubai. It's a very business-friendly environment, and I have felt safe throughout my time here, although it hinges on job availability."
As Harper continues to navigate the complexities of life in a dynamic region, his resilience and ability to adapt illustrate the ever-evolving nature of living in Dubai amidst global tensions.
