Global Electricity Demand Surges in 2025 Driven by EVs and Data Centers
Global electricity demand climbed 3% in 2025, primarily fueled by electric vehicles and data centers, surpassing overall energy demand growth.
Global Electricity Demand Increases Significantly
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released its findings indicating a significant rise in global electricity consumption in 2025. This increase is primarily attributed to the growing demand from electric vehicles (EVs) and data centers, demonstrating a shift in energy consumption patterns.
Key Drivers of Electricity Demand
According to the IEA's Global Energy Review published on April 20, 2025, global energy demand saw a modest growth of 1.3% during the year. This figure is notably lower than the pace recorded in the previous year, attributed to slower economic growth and the rapid adoption of energy-efficient technologies.
Despite the overall modest growth in energy demand, global electricity demand soared by 3%, more than doubling the general energy demand increase. This spike is largely due to a 38% surge in demand from electric vehicles and a 17% rise associated with data centers. Additionally, sectors such as industry, household appliances, and commercial buildings continued to be significant contributors to overall electricity demand.
Regional Insights
In advanced economies, electricity demand reported a 1.6% year-on-year (YoY) increase, with the US showing remarkable growth. Data centers alone accounted for approximately 50% of the total demand increase in the United States, underscoring their critical role in the energy landscape.
Conversely, while China's electricity demand remained robust, its growth rate slowed compared to previous years. This deceleration can be linked to enhanced energy efficiency initiatives and a slight reduction in cooling demand.
Overall, the IEA's report highlights the shifting dynamics of energy consumption in the face of technological advancements and changing consumer behaviors, setting the stage for future energy management and policy considerations.
