Hessa Street Development Project Reduces Travel Time Significantly in Dubai
Dubai's RTA opens Hessa Street project, cutting down travel time to four minutes and doubling road capacity to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
Hessa Street Development Project Launched
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially completed and opened the extensive Hessa Street Development Project, aimed at improving transit efficiency between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. Spanning 4.5 kilometers, the project enhances the roadway to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour—doubling the previous capacity.
Major Improvements in Traffic Flow
The latest upgrades significantly reduce travel time on this key corridor, decreasing the journey from 15 minutes to just four. The enhancements include the widening of lanes and thorough upgrades to various intersections along Hessa Street, which connects vital areas within the city.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that the successful completion of this project aligns with Dubai's broader vision of improving its infrastructure to accommodate the increasing urbanization and population growth. “Hessa Street is critical in serving the developmental zones, which includes areas like Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha Residential Area, and Jumeirah Village Circle,” he stated.
Key Features of the Development
The transformation of Hessa Street involves the construction of new lanes, bringing the total to four in each direction, along with the addition of modern traffic management systems at major intersections. The intersections that received significant enhancements include:
- Intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road: Features a newly built two-lane ramp for traffic coming from Sheikh Zayed Road.
- First Al Khail Street: Expanded from three to four lanes to enhance flow.
- Al Asayel Street: Involves an additional bridge to ease congestion on the existing route, expanding from two to four lanes.
- Al Khail Road: Introduces a direct elevated ramp to facilitate smoother traffic flow towards Sharjah and other key routes.
Looking Ahead: Phase Two
As part of ongoing efforts to improve road connectivity, the RTA has commenced work on the second phase of the Hessa Street Development Project. This forthcoming segment will extend from its intersection with Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, covering an additional three kilometers.
The second phase will enhance three major intersections and includes substantial structural additions, such as an 8,835-meter bridge system and a 480-meter tunnel. The expected outcome for phase two includes a further increase in capacity from 4,000 to 8,000 vehicles per hour, thereby reducing travel time from 24 minutes to just five.
Traffic projections indicate that this expansion will serve a population exceeding 650,000 residents and visitors, benefiting communities in areas including Jumeirah Village Circle and Dubai Science Park.
With these developments, the RTA continues to strive towards creating a more efficient and effective transportation system in Dubai.
