Kensington Gardens Closed Amid Drone Threat Near Israeli Embassy
Kensington Gardens in London is shut down after unverified drone threats targeting the Israeli embassy emerge, sparking an extensive police response.
Kensington Gardens Activity
London's Kensington Gardens has been closed following alarming reports of a drone threat directed at the nearby Embassy of Israel. The situation escalated when a video emerged online in which a group claimed to have targeted the embassy with drones supposedly carrying dangerous substances.
Police Response and Investigation
The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that no actual attack occurred, but they are actively investigating the claims and the authenticity of the footage. Officers have cordoned off a significant portion of the park and are conducting detailed searches of the area, focusing on discarded items which may be linked to the threat.
A spokesperson for the police reiterated that they do not believe there is any increased risk to public safety at this stage. Nonetheless, both police and emergency services have established a robust presence in the park to ensure the safety of the public and assess any potential hazards.
Safety Measures in Place
The police’s chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) team has been deployed near the park's bandstand, while specialist divers from the police have been seen scouting around the Round Pond ornamental lake. Moreover, the London Fire Brigade has deployed fire investigation dogs to assist in the thorough examination of the area.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Matt Jukes addressed the situation, stating, "Counter-terrorism policing London are aware of a video shared online overnight. We’re carrying out urgent inquiries to determine the authenticity of the video and to identify any potential link between it and the items discarded in Kensington Gardens."
Embassy's Statement
In an official statement, the Embassy of Israel confirmed that their premises had not been attacked and that all staff members remained safe. The embassy also expressed its ongoing communication with local authorities regarding the situation.
The area surrounding the embassy and Kensington Gardens will remain closed as investigations continue, and the police have urged the public to avoid the vicinity.
As the situation develops, authorities are committed to ensuring public safety and maintaining a secure environment in this peaceful park area of London.
