Meta Partners with Broadcom for Custom AI Chips Amid Board Changes

Meta's partnership with Broadcom promises 1 gigawatt of custom AI chips, as CEO Hock Tan exits the board after serving since 2024.

Strategic Partnership between Meta and Broadcom

In a significant move to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Meta has announced an extension of its partnership with Broadcom that emphasizes the design of custom AI accelerators. The deal entails an initial commitment to deploy 1 gigawatt of custom chips, aiming for a long-term collaboration through 2029.

Departure of Hock Tan from Meta's Board

Coinciding with this announcement, Broadcom’s CEO Hock Tan has decided not to stand for reelection to Meta's board, as confirmed by a recent filing. Tan, who joined Meta's board in 2024, has played a critical role in fostering collaboration between the two companies.

Details of the AI Chip Commitment

Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder and CEO of Meta, stated, "Meta is partnering with Broadcom across chip design, packaging, and networking to build out the massive computing foundation we need to deliver personal superintelligence to billions of people." This collaboration will enable Meta to deploy multiple gigawatts of chips based on Broadcom technology in future phases of the partnership.

Broadcom's shares experienced a 3% increase in extended trading following the announcement, while Meta's stock remained stable. Tan reassured investors regarding the durability of Meta's custom accelerator roadmap, countering any speculation about its viability during Broadcom’s recent earnings call.

Competition in the Custom Chip Landscape

Meta's MTIA (Training and Inference Accelerators), first introduced in 2023, are designed to strengthen the company’s internal AI infrastructure. This venture positions Meta competitively against technology giants such as Google and Amazon, both of which have already developed their own custom AI chips. Unlike these competitors, Meta's MTIA chips will serve exclusively for the company's internal applications.

This strategic direction represents a shift in the industry, where hyperscalers are increasingly turning to custom application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that offer a more cost-effective alternative to traditional graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia and AMD.

Meta's Broader AI Strategy

This new agreement coincides with Meta's broader strategy to enhance its AI investments, notably revealing plans for 31 data centers, with 27 located in the U.S. In early 2023, Meta committed to allocate $135 billion towards AI development, reflecting its ambition to stay competitive against leading firms, including Anthropic and OpenAI.

With recent announcements, including contracts for the deployment of AMD GPUs, millions of Nvidia chips, and partnerships with Arm Holdings for new custom chips, Meta is rapidly evolving its technological capabilities to further its goals in the burgeoning field of AI.

Changes to Meta's Board

In addition to Tan's departure, Tracey Travis, a former finance chief at Estée Lauder who joined Meta's board in 2020, will also be leaving. These board changes come at a crucial time as Meta navigates its aggressive AI development strategy.
