Shade Secures $14M Funding to Transform Video Library Searches for Creatives
Shade raises $14 million to simplify video searching for creative teams using natural language processing and advanced collaboration features.
Shade's Innovative Approach to Media Management
Shade, a startup based in New York City, has successfully raised $14 million in funding to revolutionize how creative teams search and manage their video libraries. The new funding round, led by Khosla Ventures, Construct Capital, and Bling Capital, strengthens Shade’s mission to provide an intuitive cloud storage solution tailored for agencies, marketing teams, and content creators.
Addressing a Growing Problem in Media Management
In an era where content creation is skyrocketing, the need for efficient media management is critical. Traditional cloud storage solutions often fall short, forcing creative professionals to navigate through mountains of files. Co-founders Brandon Fan and Emerson Dove launched Shade in response to their own frustrations with existing tools. “We built it out of our frustration as creatives... it was time to build one single source of truth,” Fan stated.
Key Features of Shade's Platform
Shade distinguishes itself with two main features—natural language processing and a streamable file system. The platform allows users to search for content using simple, conversational queries, enabling them to pinpoint exact moments in videos. For instance, a search for "a person holding a laptop in snow" would yield specific clips along with their timestamps. Additionally, the platform provides automatic video transcriptions, allowing users to search based on meanings and even utilize facial recognition.
Streamable File Access
A notable benefit of Shade’s approach is its streamable file system. This innovative feature enables users to mount cloud storage directly to their local systems, allowing them to access and edit files almost instantly without waiting for full downloads. This is particularly advantageous for teams working in low-bandwidth environments, as essential files remain accessible and editable.
Collaboration Made Easy
Shade also facilitates collaboration among creative teams. Users can leave feedback tied to specific timestamps in videos, attach supporting documents, and create branded collections for client deliverables with customizable access permissions. This streamlining of workflow is essential for teams managing vast libraries of media content effectively.
Competitive Landscape and Future Plans
While Shade faces competition from startups like Poly and Memories.ai, its comprehensive, ground-up redesign of file management sets it apart. According to Keith Rabois of Khosla Ventures, direct workflow management remains a challenge for many companies that only add search capabilities atop existing systems.
Looking ahead, Shade plans to enhance its access and search capabilities further, expanding its focus to include other media types such as images and documents. The startup is also developing a no-code platform to help teams automate workflows seamlessly, empowering creatives to integrate Shade into various business operations. "We’re essentially building the Lego blocks that allow you to operate any type of business," Fan explained.
With the continued evolution of content management demands, Shade is positioned to offer innovative solutions that better support the intricate workflows of today’s creative professionals.
