Tom Ellis Embraces New Challenges in CBS’s 'CIA'
Tom Ellis, best known for his charismatic portrayal of the devil in the beloved series Lucifer, is making waves once again as he takes on the role of Colin Glass, a CIA operative in CIA, CBS's latest procedural drama created by Dick Wolf. As Ellis steps into this new character, he reflects on the unique challenges of working in a high-paced network environment, the complexities of his character, and the importance of cultural representation in storytelling.
Transitioning from Lucifer to CIA
After wrapping up Lucifer in 2021, a series that allowed him to explore the comedic and dramatic aspects of the supernatural, Ellis felt ready for a new adventure. When approached by Dick Wolf's team with the concept of CIA, which revolves around a CIA operative teaming up with an FBI agent in New York, he sensed it was the right fit. "The prospect of coming to New York was something that really ticked a lot of boxes for me," Ellis shared.
Ellis initially considered adopting an American accent for the role of Colin Glass but eventually embraced the idea of making his character British. “It feels like the perfect cover,” he explained, alluding to the unexpected juxtaposition of a British CIA operative.
The Challenges of Network Television
While Lucifer had its share of fast-paced moments, Ellis notes that the schedule on CIA has been the busiest he's ever experienced. He admits that adjusting to this intensive production schedule required building stamina. The rigorous demands sometimes tested his limits, especially as he juggles acting with fatherhood.
"For the first time ever, I felt my age a little bit this year, but now I feel like I'm ready,” Ellis remarked, acknowledging the toll that a busy filming schedule can take. Despite the grueling pace, he appreciates the opportunity to work with a seasoned team that efficiently orchestrates the demanding workload.
Exploring Moral Complexities
Much like Lucifer, CIA delves into the moral gray areas inherent in its narrative. During production, Ellis and his fellow cast members strive to portray the ethical dilemmas faced by intelligence officers with sensitivity.
“The CIA is such a secretive agency,” he pointed out, reflecting on the nuanced storytelling involved. “It’s not a political show, but it is about an institution that...has had to use dubious tactics.” The show emphasizes the idea that, in the realm of espionage, the line between good and bad is often blurred. Ellis highlighted the importance of accurately representing diverse cultures and resisting the urge to generalize about groups of people.
Learning from Industry Legends
In his recent work on The Thursday Murder Club, alongside renowned actors such as Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, Ellis discovered valuable lessons about sustaining an acting career. He admires their vibrant energy and passion despite their age, noting, "I think this job keeps you young."
Ellis's journey from the infernal world of Lucifer to the intense realities of espionage in CIA showcases his versatility as an actor and his commitment to exploring the complexities of human characters. His next steps will surely be intriguing as he balances the demands of a leading role with the lessons learned from experience in the industry.
