UN Warns of Imminent Famine Risk in South Sudan Amid Escalating Conflict

South Sudan faces an imminent risk of famine as fighting escalates, warns UN's Tom Fletcher, with over 7.5 million in need of food assistance.

South Sudan Faces Rising Risk of Famine

The United Nations has issued a stark warning regarding the dire humanitarian situation in South Sudan, declaring that the country is at risk of a ‘full-scale famine’ as violence escalates. In remarks made by the UN's humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, the urgency of the crisis was underscored by the need for immediate action to prevent a catastrophic deterioration of living conditions in the region.

Humanitarian Crisis and Food Insecurity

Tom Fletcher, who serves as the under-secretary-general for Humanitarian Affairs and emergency relief coordinator, stated that hunger is increasingly pervasive in South Sudan. More than 7.5 million people across the ten states of the nation are projected to require food assistance this year, particularly as the lean season intensifies until the end of July.

Fletcher noted, "Emergency levels of food insecurity are expected across the country. After spending a week on the ground, I fear my next briefing could speak of famine. We have already seen humanitarian compounds looted and nutrition centers destroyed, particularly in Jonglei State where over 140,000 are in dire need of help."

The situation in South Sudan has worsened due to ongoing conflicts, which have disrupted humanitarian aid efforts and further exacerbated food shortages.

Escalating Conflict and Displacement

Anita Kiki Gbeho, the head of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), elaborated on how civilians are bearing the brunt of increased violence between government forces and opposition groups. Fighting has escalated following a peace agreement that ended a five-year civil war in 2018. Recent clashes have driven over 280,000 people from their homes, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis as many are cut off from food and essential services.

Fletcher called on the UN Security Council to facilitate unhindered humanitarian access and ensure all parties respect humanitarian laws, highlighting the urgent need for flexible funding to support the affected populations.

The Path Forward

As the Security Council prepares to review the UNMISS mandate, which is currently set to expire on April 30, Gbeho emphasized that the scale of the needs on the ground is not being met by adequate international support. She urged the global community to make a sustained investment in the region to fulfill the collective goal of achieving lasting peace and stability.

The UN's warning comes at a critical time as South Sudan grapples with not only an escalating conflict but also the impacts of climate-related disasters that have already destroyed livelihoods and further deprived many of the vital resources necessary for survival.

In light of these developments, the international community’s response will be crucial in addressing the unfolding crisis in South Sudan and mitigating the imminent risk of famine.
